Benefits stacks: Koch Industries and Ford Motor Co.

Issue 054

Welcome back to E&O Wednesdays, the enrollment-focused digital health newsletter from Exits & Outcomes — for paying subscribers only. This every-other-Wednesday issue digs into digital health companies that sell to self-insured employers as well as others that rely on enrollment-based distribution for their digital health programs.

 E&O Wednesdays: Employers

This edition of E&O Wednesdays includes the fifty-somethingth BigCo digital health employee benefits stack analysis. If you would like a quick summary of what E&O found in its analysis of some of the first 50+ BigCo stacks, check out this searchable, sortable database right here. Was this forwarded to you? Increasingly, E&O is a covered benefit from many forward-looking digital health-focused employers. Why not yours? Consider a Business or Enterprise subscription today. Click this link to become a paying subscriber (there are personal plans available too).

Big employer benefits stacks: Koch Industries and Ford (revisited)

Digital health companies love to boast how many Fortune 500 customers they have, but they aren’t always able to share which big companies offer their programs. That’s where E&O comes in. This recurring feature of E&O Wednesdays digs into a Fortune 500’s (or similarly-sized employer’s) digital health stack. So far, in past Wednesdays issues, I’ve written about the digital health benefits stacks of dozens of big companies. This searchable, sortable database over at the E&O site sums up the benefits stacks of more than 40 BigCos. Or, click any of the BigCo names below to read the newsletter that featured a full write-up for each:

This week I revisited the benefits stack of BigCo Ford Motor Co and found one new addition. I also took a look at which digital health-powered benefits massive conglomerate Koch Industries offers its employees, which yielded some new ones that I’ve heard of but hadn’t previously seen out in the wild of benefits stacks yet.

First, let’s take a look back at Ford’s benefits stack. Back in June 2021, I dug into Ford Motor Co’s benefits stack. Not a whole lot has changed in the past two years, in fact, Ford hasn’t dropped any of its digital health benefits in recent years. Here’s what stayed the same:

  • Alight for benefits navigation.
  • American Well powers the BCBS Michigan-branded virtual visits.
  • Castlight for care navigation, doctor search, price transparency.
  • Mequilibrium for employee resilience and burnout.
  • Foodsmart for nutrition and healthy eating.
  • Omada for diabetes prevention.

New: Ford added Lyra Health as its EAP

As noted above, Ford wasn’t offering much for mental health. MeQuilibrium was its only digital health-powered mental health benefit. Ford did offer EAP services through an EAP named Health Management Systems of America prior to 2023. For its 2023 benefits, the company switched to Lyra Health:

“Your mental and emotional health matters, which is why we’re expanding our mental health and wellbeing benefits through Lyra, a new provider. Beginning in May, you and your family members will each be eligible for ten free counseling sessions per year. This program is designed to increase your access to the resources you need, when you need them, without worrying about the cost.”

“For those who are currently under care with Health Management Systems of America (HMSA), watch for more information and transition assistance in May.”

Alright, let’s move on to Koch Industries’ benefits stack: Koch Industries includes a number of companies like Koch, Infor, Invista, Flint Hills Resources, Georgia-Pacific, Molex, and Guardian Industries.

Sharecare for Health Advocacy: Not much on this one, but in a few places the benefits guide points employees to the Sharecare app or a 1-800 number to talk to a health advocate about their medical benefits.

Virtual visits via American Well’s LiveHealth Online on the Sharecare app: Not much on this one either, but Koch advertises telemedicine as an option on the Sharecare app. They pitch it as for both physical and mental health issues.

Spring Health for mental health and professional coaching

Koch provides a full page of info on its Spring Health benefit. Here are a few excerpts:

“Whether we’re a little anxious every now and then or have more complex needs, we could all use support to help meet everyday challenges. Spring Health offers 100% confidential, no-cost counseling for you and all members of your household age 6+.”

“There is no enrollment required. Spring Health can assist you across a spectrum of needs, from daily challenges to clinical support for anxiety and depression. Complete a short mental health assessment, and Spring Health will recommend a care plan specific to your needs…

“Included with Spring Health are eight no-cost therapy sessions for you and all members of your household, plus unlimited access to care navigators for guidance, check-ins, mental health support, and more.”

Koch also pitches Spring Health’s services for professional coaching:

“With Spring Health, you (and all members of your household) have access to unlimited professional coaching sessions each year to help you achieve your goals whether it’s fitness, financial, career, or something else. There is no enrollment required or cost to you.”

Transcarent for surgery support

Concierge Surgery Support At-A-Glance: With Transcarent Surgery Care, you have access to the country’s best surgical facilities that specialize in treating your specific condition. Because surgeries through Transcarent result in fewer complications, Koch covers more of the costs.”

2nd.MD for second opinions

“When facing a major medical decision, reach out to 2nd.MD for a second opinion from an expert doctor specializing in your condition. 2nd.MD services are part of your health benefits and are NO COST to you and eligible family members. See your benefit documents for complete coverage details.”

Hinge Health for virtual physical therapy

“Save time and money while overcoming pain anytime, anywhere through virtual physical therapy. Hinge Health is available at no cost. We provide all the tools you need to get moving again from the comfort of your home. You’ll get exercise therapy tailored to your needs, technology for instant feedback in the app, a personal coach and physical therapist. All the care you need is in your Hinge Health toolkit.”

Omada Health for diabetes management and weight management

Diabetes Support Omada Diabetes Support offers expert advice and tools for employees who have diabetes, whether insulin dependent or not. The program includes a free, connected glucometer and test strips, if needed, and 24/7 access to a certified diabetes educator.”

Weight Management Omada Weight Management brings the support you need to achieve your well-being goals. The program includes a free, connected scale, a powerful app, and a personal coach with helpful advice and incremental, easy-to-implement life changes.”

Pomelo Care for maternity and infertility support

“Medical plan members have access to Pomelo Care that provides 24/7 telehealth for pregnancy and infant care before, during, and after pregnancy. If you are an expectant birth mom, a recent birth mom, or a spouse, Pomelo will offer access to a team of doctors, midwives, nurses, therapists, nutrition experts, and more.”

“Pomelo will also be your guide to the infertility benefits available through the Koch medical plan, which includes a $20,000 lifetime max for treatment.”

OK, that’s a wrap on Ford and Koch Industries’ rather substantial benefits stacks. Which BigCo should E&O dig into next? Hit reply if you have a suggestion.
